I love reading and learning new things, especially when it has to do with my passions. But without the accountability of reading with others, it’s difficult to make it a habit.
Consider this your online reading group!
Each month, we will read books relevant to the Suzuki Violin Method, or music and musicians. Each one is selected to guide us in understanding the process of teaching and learning music. It is my hope that you can learn with me, and help your students at home.
Our first selection, for December 2018, is Teaching Genius: Dorothy DeLay and the Making of a Musician, by Barbara Lourie Sand. DeLay was violin teacher to scores of students, including Itzhak Perlman, Isaac Stern, and many other big names in the violin world. I look forward to learning about her with you. I’ll post some reading notes and questions along the way.
For a quick overview of her life, you can read her obituary here.
My goal is 55 pages a week, so I’ll post in the coming weeks as I read. Please join me, and share your thoughts and ideas as we go.
